It all started on a bus.
Not on battlefields with guns blazing,
generals barking orders, and
soldiers frantically charging into the fray.
But on a bus.
No smoke-filled room
or congressional caucus chamber.
No basement Sunday school classroom
of the local Baptist church,
no auditorium in the neighborhood
community center.
But on a bus.
Not by representatives
of the NAACP,
no Urban Leaguers,
local civil rights activist,
or radicals be they right or left.
But by a demure, wife, mother
and seamstress, who simply said –
I’ve had enough.
The daughter of a schoolteacher,
wife of a barber, a woman of courage,
a change agent in a world so desperately
in need of confronting its many contradictions.
She was the mother of a movement,
That all started on a bus.
